Review Extract - Extrait de Recension

Another review has been published in the Journal for the Study of the New Testament, 37.5, August 2015. Here is an excerpt:

"Most interest in this book will probably be in the Wirkungsgeschichte ['History of the Effect', or how the expression 'to the Jew first' was understood throughout history, according to different contexts] itself. Many libraries will be interested to have evidence of this usage brought together and analysed, a task that Fritz has tackled very effectively."

Peter Oakes, Greenwood Senior Lecturer in the New Testament, The University of Manchester

Une autre recension a été publiée dans le Journal for the Study of the New Testament 37.5 en Août 2015.

Not to us first - Non à nous premièrement

Through my studies, I have been constantly reminded how much the Bible had not been written first to us. Sure, at the Seminary, I have often been told that each text should be considered in its context, but at the same time there were this traditional evangelical approach which was encouraging us to read the Bible as if God had addressed it directly to us. It is right too, but let's be reminded that it had not been written first to us, and let's consider how the people it had been written to were reading it, in their own historical context. Having done this, I am sure that the Bible will speak to us too!

Yeshua or Yeshu? Yeshua ou Yeshu ?

When I was a teenager, I heard a story: during an evangelistic campaign in France, someone knocked at a door and asked the woman who opened: 'Do you know Jesus Christ?' and the woman answered 'Sorry, I have just move here and don't know all the neighbours'!

More recently, someone told me about a Christmas assembly going on in a British school, telling about the story of Joseph, Mary and Jesus. One of the boys attending said afterwards to his parents: 'It was a lovely story, but how some parents can name their child after a swear word'!

In 2008, Jews for Jesus commissioned a survey by an Israeli polling firm, 21st Century Marketing: 981 people answered the questions focused on Jesus, despite the fact that '[w]hen the subject matter of this poll became clear to people, two thirds of those approached refused to participate.'[1] Since then, the mission is very keen to use this poll to insist on the fact that 'Y'shua' (the Jewish way to say 'Jesus') is not known by the Israeli.

The twenty questions asked included: 'What is the name of the Christian Messiah?' Only 8% of the respondents knew that Y'shua is the Hebrew name of Jesus. The survey showed that most believe that the Hebrew way to say Jesus was Yeshu, a Hebrew acronym for the remaining letters: Yimmach Shemo Ve-zikro, which means, 'May his name and memory be blotted out.' This 'curse' was partially realized, as 'Yeshu' became the name by which Jesus is known in Israel, even to this day (especially since it is very close phonetically to 'Jesus'). 35% knew Jesus only as 'a Jew who started a new religion.' 62% knew that he is reputed to have performed miracles, but only 5% of the Israelis polled had ever heard that Jesus rose from the dead.

I do not want to question the survey but more the way it can be used to make people believe that Israeli would not know Jesus. It is not the case: if they do not use the name Y'shua (a very common name in Israel) to refer to Jesus, it does not mean that they have not heard about him. Actually, since the Holocaust that the Jewish people usually associate with the Christians and the many tourists visiting the Holy Land, they tend to be reminded of him quite often: they know for instance that one cannot be a Jew and believe in Jesus. As Hubert Luns, who did his doctoral dissertation in Danish on the name of Jesus,[2] concludes: 'Let us sum up: the form Yeshu, rather than Yeshua, enjoys a special position in Israel today. To non-specialists, i.e. to the Israeli in the street, Yeshu is the name of the founder of Christianity. Most people do not know the imprecation formula Yimmach Shemo Wezikro.'[3]

Amazon

Since publishing the book, many have asked me: "Is it available on Amazon?"
Amazon remains a reference even if it is a nightmare for the bookshops! Today, I discovered that it is now available on amazon.com, amazon.co.uk and amazon.fr.
But, remember, think bookshops please!

Cover - Couverture

The cover of a book is quite important and I am glad Christian Amondson did a very good job for mine. He used a photo of a mosaic of the Apostle Paul from an Russian Orthodox Church in Sevastopol in Ukraine.

Typesetting - Composition

I would never have thought that typesetting was so a hard job. Beside transliterating all the Greek and Hebrew quotations, I had to change my English spelling and punctuation for the American's. I've also translated all the foreign quotations. I have added two introductions and one conclusion to the chapters, passages that I had cut off from my thesis because they were not so academic; I thought they would fit well for a book. Finally, I have created 3 indexes (authors, biblical references and subjects). If you add to that all the correspondence with the publisher, it has been few months of part time job. I am glad to have finish this part and am longing for the book to be made available!

Publishing - Publication

Here I am back to work! I signed a contract with an American Publisher in order to publish a book dealing with the priority in mission and the mission among the Jewish people. A lot to do considering the fact that 'England and America are two countries separated by a common language'![1]

[1] Attributed to George Bernard Shaw, Reader's Digest, November 1942, despite the fact that Oscar Wilde (and certainly others) had expressed similar feelings before him: '… we have everything in common with America nowadays, except, of course, language.' (Oscar Wilde, The Canterville Ghost, 1887).

Viva passed - Soutenance réussie

This Thursday 26th of July, I successfully passed my PhD viva! I have some minor corrections to make and I hope to make them the second part of August. I am really thankful to God and to everybody who encouraged me and prayed for me. It is a relief I still have difficulty to seize. Blessed be the Lord!

Viva - Soutenance

The viva is planned to take place the 26th of July at 2.00 pm. This viva will not be open to the public contrary to a French viva: I will have to defend my thesis in front of two examiners, one external and one internal to the London School of Theology - Middlesex University (my supervisor and a chairman will also be present). It is a very unpleasant period of preparation and many questions arise. I don't like this time, waiting, wondering. I reread my thesis and of course found mistakes! Arhhh! I am working now on the notes of some important books to be prepared to any question. I also take advantage of this quiet time to have some rest.

History of a quotation - Histoire d'une citation

Here is the quotation ascribed to Dr Gustav Dalman of Leipsic (1855-1941):

'[If] all the Jews who have embraced Christianity had remained a distinct people, instead of being absorbed by the nations among whom they dwelt, their descendants would be counted in millions.'

I have first read this interesting quotation in an article of Blocher, H., 'Two Covenant Theology and its Implications for Jewish Missions', in Parker, D. (ed.), Jesus, Salvation and the Jewish People: The Uniqueness of Jesus and Jewish Evangelism, Milton Keynes, UK: Paternoster, [2008], 2011, 197-8. In it, Blocher referred to this quotation as quoted by Robinson, D., 'Not boasting Over the Natural Branches: Gentile Circumspection in the Divine Economy' in Bolt, P., et al. (eds.), The Gospel to the Nations: Perspectives on Paul's Mission. In honour of Peter T. O'Brien, Downers Grove, IL-Leicester: IVP-Apollos, 2000, 171.

After a look at the quotation of Robinson, I found that Robinson, D, was quoting it from Robinson, C.H., History of Christian Missions, Edinburgh: T&T Clark, 1915, 473-4. I checked this book from this other Robinson and it appears that Dalman was quoted this time from Stock, E., A Short Handbook of Missions, London: Longmans & Co., 1904, 155. Unfortunately, Stock did not footnote this quotation...

Has Dalman really said it?

Two Covenant Theology and its Implications for Jewish Missions', in Parker, D. (ed.), Jesus, Salvation and the Jewish People: The Uniqueness of Jesus and Jewish Evangelism, Milton Keynes, UK: Paternoster, [2008], 2011, 197-8. Dans cet article, Blocher signale que cette phrase est citée dans l'article de Robinson, D., 'Not boasting Over the Natural Branches: Gentile Circumspection in the Divine Economy' in Bolt, P., et al. (eds.), The Gospel to the Nations: Perspectives on Paul's Mission. In honour of Peter T. O'Brien, Downers Grove, IL-Leicester: IVP-Apollos, 2000, 171.

Wait - Attente

I am currently in this particular period of time between the submission of the thesis and the viva. Wait, wait. I am unwilling to look at my soft-bound thesis, scared to find some spelling mistakes, omissions or misinterpretations. Some people asked me what were my conclusions. I am reluctant to open myself up. I still have some books I want to finish before the viva and, to change my mind and get back on my feet again, I am looking for a part-time job.

Submission - Remise

Today, I submitted my thesis. What a relief! Here is now the official title:
'To the Jew first or to the Jew at last? Romans 1:16c and Jewish Missional Priority in dialogue with Jews for Jesus.'

Aujourd'hui, j'ai remis ma thèse. Quel soulagement !

The Unconscious - L'Inconscient

In the past weeks, I realized a funny thing. The word that I studied the most during these three years was actually the word 'first'. If the phrase I was concentrated on was 'to the Jew first', I took a lot of time on the priority expressed by 'first'. And yet, my name is 'Fritz'. Considering that the 'z' in 'Fritz' is pronounced like a 's' in 'first', I am wondering if an unconscious phenomenon occurred, but it is only pure speculation...

Or, mon nom est "Fritz".

Proofreading - Relecture

Here comes the time of proofreading. Well, actually, the final proofreading.
I had 3 proofreaders at work for my thesis: a brother in my church kindly proofread all the drafts I submitted to my supervisor who was the second proofreader, more focused on the development of the study. Finally, another experienced theologian proofread the whole thesis at the end, looking at all the details and the use of footnotes and bibliography. I am really thankful for what they did. It allowed me to write a thesis in English, an amazing thing which I wouldn't have thought possible a few years ago!
