Viva passed - Soutenance réussie

This Thursday 26th of July, I successfully passed my PhD viva! I have some minor corrections to make and I hope to make them the second part of August. I am really thankful to God and to everybody who encouraged me and prayed for me. It is a relief I still have difficulty to seize. Blessed be the Lord!

Ce jeudi 26 juillet, j'ai réussi ma soutenance de thèse ! J'ai quelques corrections mineures à apporter à mon travail et espère faire ces corrections dans la 2^e partie d'août. Je suis très reconnaissant au Seigneur et à toutes les personnes qui m'ont encouragé et ont prié pour moi. C'est un soulagement certain que j'ai encore du mal à saisir. Que le Seigneur soit béni !

Viva - Soutenance

The viva is planned to take place the 26th of July at 2.00 pm. This viva will not be open to the public contrary to a French viva: I will have to defend my thesis in front of two examiners, one external and one internal to the London School of Theology - Middlesex University (my supervisor and a chairman will also be present). It is a very unpleasant period of preparation and many questions arise. I don't like this time, waiting, wondering. I reread my thesis and of course found mistakes! Arhhh! I am working now on the notes of some important books to be prepared to any question. I also take advantage of this quiet time to have some rest.

La soutenance est prévue pour le 26 juillet à 14h00. Cette soutenance ne sera pas publique contrairement à ce qui se fait en France : je devrai me défendre devant deux examinateurs, l'un extérieur et l'autre intérieur à la London School of Theolgy - Middlesex University (mon superviseur et un président de séance seront aussi présents). Ce temps de préparation est pénible et beaucoup de questions surgissent. Je n'aime pas cette période d'attente et de questionnement. J'ai relu ma thèse et bien sûr ai trouvé des erreurs ! Arhhh ! Je travaille maintenant sur les notes de quelques livres importants pour être prêt à répondre à toute question. J'en profite aussi pour me reposer.

History of a quotation - Histoire d'une citation

Here is the quotation ascribed to Dr Gustav Dalman of Leipsic (1855-1941):

'[If] all the Jews who have embraced Christianity had remained a distinct people, instead of being absorbed by the nations among whom they dwelt, their descendants would be counted in millions.'

I have first read this interesting quotation in an article of Blocher, H., 'Two Covenant Theology and its Implications for Jewish Missions', in Parker, D. (ed.), Jesus, Salvation and the Jewish People: The Uniqueness of Jesus and Jewish Evangelism, Milton Keynes, UK: Paternoster, [2008], 2011, 197-8. In it, Blocher referred to this quotation as quoted by Robinson, D., 'Not boasting Over the Natural Branches: Gentile Circumspection in the Divine Economy' in Bolt, P., et al. (eds.), The Gospel to the Nations: Perspectives on Paul's Mission. In honour of Peter T. O'Brien, Downers Grove, IL-Leicester: IVP-Apollos, 2000, 171.

After a look at the quotation of Robinson, I found that Robinson, D, was quoting it from Robinson, C.H., History of Christian Missions, Edinburgh: T&T Clark, 1915, 473-4. I checked this book from this other Robinson and it appears that Dalman was quoted this time from Stock, E., A Short Handbook of Missions, London: Longmans & Co., 1904, 155. Unfortunately, Stock did not footnote this quotation...

Has Dalman really said it?

Ayant jeté un coup d'oeil à l'article de Robinson, je me suis aperçu que ce Robinson, D, citait en fait Robinson, C.H., History of Christian Missions, Edinburgh: T&T Clark, 1915, 473-4. J'ai vérifié ce livre écrit par cet autre Robinson et il apparaît que Dalman y est cité cette fois-ci de Stock, E., A Short Handbook of Missions, London: Longmans & Co., 1904, 155. Malheureusement, Stock n'a pas précisé d'où provenait cette citation...

Dalman a-t-il réellement prononcé ces mots ?

Wait - Attente

I am currently in this particular period of time between the submission of the thesis and the viva. Wait, wait. I am unwilling to look at my soft-bound thesis, scared to find some spelling mistakes, omissions or misinterpretations. Some people asked me what were my conclusions. I am reluctant to open myself up. I still have some books I want to finish before the viva and, to change my mind and get back on my feet again, I am looking for a part-time job.

Je suis dans cette période un peu particulière d'attente, entre la remise de la thèse et la soutenance. Je suis réticent à lire ma thèse maintenant reliée, effrayé de découvrir des erreurs, des omissions ou des contresens. Certains m'ont demandé de leur donner mes conclusions. Je ne veux pas me livrer. J'ai toujours quelques livres que j'aimerais finir avant la soutenance et, pour me changer les idées et renflouer les caisses, je cherche un travail à temps partiel.

Submission - Remise

Today, I submitted my thesis. What a relief! Here is now the official title:
'To the Jew first or to the Jew at last? Romans 1:16c and Jewish Missional Priority in dialogue with Jews for Jesus.' 


Aujourd'hui, j'ai remis ma thèse. Quel soulagement ! Voici le titre officiel:
'"Au Juif premièrement ou enfin au Juif? Romans 1:16c et Priorité Missionaire envers le peuple juif en dialogue avec Juifs pour Jésus."

The Unconscious - L'Inconscient

In the past weeks, I realized a funny thing. The word that I studied the most during these three years was actually the word 'first'. If the phrase I was concentrated on was 'to the Jew first', I took a lot of time on the priority expressed by 'first'. And yet, my name is 'Fritz'. Considering that the 'z' in 'Fritz' is pronounced like a 's' in 'first', I am wondering if an unconscious phenomenon occurred, but it is only pure speculation...

Ces dernières semaines, je me suis rendu compte d'une chose amusante. Le mot que j'ai le plus étudié durant ces 3 ans fut en fait le mot "first" (premièrement, premier). Si j'ai concentré mon étude sur l'expression "au Juif premièrement", j'ai en fait passé beaucoup de temps sur la priorité exprimée par "first". Or, mon nom est "Fritz". Etant donné que le "z" dans "Fritz" se prononce comme le "s" dans "first", je me demande si un phénomène inconscient a opéré, mais ce n'est que pure spéculation...

Proofreading - Relecture

Here comes the time of proofreading. Well, actually, the final proofreading.
I had 3 proofreaders at work for my thesis: a brother in my church kindly proofread all the drafts I submitted to my supervisor who was the second proofreader, more focused on the development of the study. Finally, another experienced theologian proofread the whole thesis at the end, looking at all the details and the use of footnotes and bibliography. I am really thankful for what they did. It allowed me to write a thesis in English, an amazing thing which I wouldn't have thought possible a few years ago!

Voici venu le temps de la relecture, la dernière relecture.

Trois personnes m'ont aidé à ce niveau durant ce travail de thèse : un frère de l'église a gentiment relu toutes les versions que je présentais à mon superviseur, superviseur qui à son tour relisais mon travail en s'attachant plus au développement de la démonstration. Enfin, une théologienne expérimentée a relu toute la thèse à la fin, dans le détail, en faisant attention à mon utilisation des notes de bas de page et de la bibliographie. Je suis sincèrement reconnaissant pour tout leur travail qui m'a permis d'écrire cette étude en anglais, chose inimaginable il y a quelques années !

Delivery - Accouchement

As my work is going toward the end -and perhaps because my wife is pregnant- I really feel that I am about to deliver! My head is buzzing with many questions and thoughts as I am writing my conclusions. I am scared to miss something and realized at the same time the impact of my results. It is perhaps the most difficult period of this thesis and I hope the baby will be here soon.

Alors que mon travail de thèse arrive à sa fin -et peut-être parce que ma femme est enceinte- j'ai vraiment l'impression que je vais accoucher ! J'ai la tête qui bourdonne de questions et pensées pendant que j'écris mes conclusions. J'ai peur d'oublier quelque chose et en même temps me rends compte de la portée de mes résultats. C'est sans doute la période la plus difficile de cette thèse et j'espère que le bébé sera bientôt là.

Ministry training - Formation au ministère

In Illuminate, the new London School of Theology student magazine (page 14), I found this quotation of J. John very inspiring: 'Jesus spent 30 years  preparing for 3 years of ministry, so you can spend at least 3 years preparing for 30 years of ministry.'

Dans Illuminate, le nouveau journal des étudiants de la London School of Theology (page 14), j'ai trouvé cette citation de J. John très édifiante : 'Jésus a passé 30 ans de sa vie à se préparer à 3 ans de ministère, vous pouvez donc passé 3 ans de votre vie à vous préparer à 30 ans de ministère.'

40 years old - 40 ans

I am 40 years old and I suddenly read this morning these verses of Acts 4:21-22 in a different manner. It is question of a lame healed by Peter and John; the disciples are then threatened by the Sanhedrin: 'After threatening them again, they let them go, finding no way to punish them because of the people, for all of them praised God for what had happened. For the man on whom this sign of healing had been performed was more than forty years old.' (NRSV)
If some have seen in these 40 years the symbolic end of the desert for Israel, it may simply that 40 years old is like a new stage in human life, a time when people really believe what you say: it is a great news for me!

J'ai 40 ans et ce matin j'ai lu tout à fait différemment ces versets d'Actes 4:21-22. C'est l'épisode de ce boiteux qui est guéri par Pierre et Jean; les disciples sont ensuite menacés par le Sanhédrin: 'Sur des menaces renouvelées, on les relâcha, faute d'avoir trouvé moyen de les condamner. C'était à cause du peuple: car tout le monde rendait gloire à Dieu de ce qui s'était passé. L'homme qui avait bénéficié de cette guérison miraculeuse avait en effet plus de quarante ans.' (TOB)
Si certains ont vu dans ces quarante ans la fin symbolique du désert pour Israël, c'est peut-être simplement l'indication que la quarantaine représente une nouvelle étape dans la vie humaine, celle où l'on croit ce que vous dîtes: c'est une merveilleuse nouvelle pour moi !

For few years now, I am receiving the HomeWord daily devotional from Jim Burns and his team. In today's one, this quotation from Bill Glass struck me:

There came a time in my life when I earnestly prayed, "God I want Your power!" Time wore on and the power did not come. One day the burden was more than I could bear. "God, why haven't You answered that prayer?" God seemed to whisper back His simple reply, "With plans no bigger than yours, you don't need My power."*

Depuis plusieurs années maintenant, je reçois de Jim Burns et son équipe une "méditation du jour" par e-mail. Aujourd'hui, cette citation de Bill Glass m'a frappé:

I leak - Je fuis

I have just read this funny anecdote in a book of George Verwer, founder of Operation Mobilisation:

'We need a constant work of the Holy Spirit. I often tell the story about D. L. Moody who would emphasise the need to be filled with the Spirit again and again. On day when asked, "Mr Moody why do you keep saying we have to be filled again and again?" he replied, "Because I leak".'[1]

Je viens juste de lire cette amusante anecdote dans un livre de Gerge Verwer, fondateur d'Opération Mobilisation :

"Nous avons besoin du travail constant du Saint Esprit. Je raconte souvent cette histoire de D. L. Moody qui  insistait sur le besoin d'être rempli de l'Esprit, encore et encore.  Un jour, quelqu'un lui demanda : 'Monsieur Moody, pourquoi n'arrêtez-vous pas de dire que nous devons être rempli [de l'Esprit] encore et encore? Il répondit : 'Parce ce que je fuis'."[1]
